New NFB Facebook page

Thursday 21 January 2010

Facebook_vedette

We’ve completely overhauled our Facebook Fan page. Click here to check it out. Here’s what’s new:

Brand New FILMS Page

This page has all the same features as NFB.ca – you can watch and comment on the latest new films while you’re still in Facebook. The page also allows easier sharing within your Facebook newsfeed, so you can let your friends and family know all about the important and awesome films you’re watching.

New T-SHIRTS Shop

We wanted to make all our retro NFB T-shirts available on the Facebook page. So here they are. A brand new Facebook T-shirt shop.

Facebook DVD Shop

Now you can buy the latest NFB DVDs right on Facebook.

Do you like it?

Don’t worry, the trusty old Wall is still there too. Let us know what you think, though, in the comments below – or on our Facebook wall if you prefer…

Hothouse 6 Call for Submissions

Wednesday 20 January 2010

Tell it in a minute. Do it in 3 months. Make it Stereoscopic 3D.

After a lot of hard work to put the pieces in place, we are thrilled to announce that Hothouse 6 is open for submissions.

A new dimension this year — and a giant experiment — Hothouse 6 will be produced in stereoscopic 3D!

The theme is “Inside Out“. Deadline to submit is February 19.

We are looking for very short film proposals from emerging filmmakers (young and not-so-young), and artists intrigued by animation art, for this 12-week paid apprenticeship in full-on, all-inclusive, real-world animation filmmaking. See full submission details here.

Nina Paley: A ‘Free’ Distribution Case Study

Monday 28 December 2009

People talk a lot about the economics of giving content away for “free”, but only a few put that into action. And fewer still share their experiences with everyone so we can learn from them.

Here Nina Paley gives a methodical breakdown of where she made money (and where she didn’t) after she put her feature-length animated film, Sita Sings the Blues, under a share-alike Creative Commons license. (By the way, I’ve posted the film below. Why not? It’s free).

Note
: Theatrical distribution revenue was about $22k, of which Paley garnered about $3k.

Paley earned most of her money through donations. Over $50k. Proving that audiences want to be able to pay the artist for their work. Donations fall under the patronage category under Kevin Kelley’s guide to generating revenue under a “free” economy. Read Kevin Kelley’s essay here, Better than Free.

Here’s the film! (PS It’s great)…
