Welcome to the NFB.ca blog, an online space dedicated to Canadian documentary, animation and film culture. Our goal is to create a destination for conversation and debate focused around films, filmmaking and the NFB’s links to communities across the country. To facilitate the conversation, we’ve divided the blog into 6 categories:

ON FILM
Posts pertaining to movies available for free streaming on NFB.ca – background, context, fun facts and recommended viewing.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Interviews with filmmakers, making-of clips and master classes will be featured with the aim of giving you a sneak peek at what goes into the making of a film.

INDUSTRY
Geared towards those already in the film milieu, this section covers film festivals, events, calls for proposal and tips for filmmakers.

LABS
Learn more about how we’re innovating at the NFB – whether it be in filmmaking, technology or social media.

COMMUNITY
This space is dedicated to events happening in the community at large and stories of interest to Canadians and people around the world.

EDUCATION
For teachers and educators, this section will help you discover the educational potential of our film collection.

If you have suggestions for posts, topics or films that you’d like to know more about, please feel free to contact us at C.Weldon@nfb.ca.

Our team

Carolyne Weldon

Carolyne Weldon is a Montreal-based writer and photographer. Raised in the woods by parents who strongly believed in yoga camp, TV-deprivation and seaweed-based desserts, she left home to study linguistics and anthropology. Soon shelving the vague dream of saving the world’s endangered languages she fell headlong into compulsive travel, developing an unusual love for Turkey, the Arctic and pickup truck road trips. Carolyne holds a post-graduate degree in journalism, a great cover for her deep-rooted penchant for talking to strangers. She loves owls, all things coconut, bass-heavy music and the colour turquoise. Contact Carolyne Weldon at c.weldon@nfb.ca

Julie Matlin

Julie is currently the Social Media Strategist for the National Film Board. Her background in the film industry, her work as a writer and her affinity for connecting with people made her a natural fit for the NFB. Her favourite films include The Big Snit, Strange Invaders, RiP! A Remix Manifesto and the interactive project, Flawed.
