The NFB Celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month – the perfect time for us to share films from our collection that celebrate and explore this rich culture and history.
Hungu, by Nicolas Brault, is a beautifully crafted short that uses sand animation to tell the story of a mother whose soul is resurrected by music to return strength and life to her child. The film is not currently available in our Screening Room, but you can join the other 350,000 people who have watched it on our YouTube channel.
Some of the films that are available in the Screening Room include:
Black Soul – an animated short that takes viewers on a fascinating trip through history to revisit the moments and events that shaped the cultural heritage of an entire population.
Speak it! From the Heart of Black Nova Scotia – a short documentary that follows a group of Black high school students who fight racism and discrimination on a daily basis, and shows what they’ve done to bring about change.
You can also explore our Black History Playlist, where you’ll find The Road Taken, Golden Gloves, Crossroads, Speakers for the Dead and The Magic Lion.
What are some of your favourites from our collection? If there are films on the subject that resonate with you but are not currently available in the Screening Room, let us know.
