People Watching: How Are Animated Films Made?

Ever wondered how animated films come to life—from sketch to screen?
Now’s your chance to find out!

The National Film Board of Canada is pulling back the curtain and offering exclusive access to the making of Hothouse, our acclaimed three-month creative residency for emerging animators.

The three-part behind-the-scenes series Inside Hothouse follows six rising talents through their sleepless nights, creative setbacks, and breakthrough moments.

Taking a page from the theme of this year’s edition, “People Watching,” we invite you to do just that: observe the artists behind the animation. Discover their stories, their hopes, their struggles—and the passion that fuels their craft.

DEVELOPMENT (STORYBOARD)

The filmmakers get familiar with their first task: turning ideas into storyboards.

PRODUCTION (ANIMATION, VOICE RECORDING, MUSIC & FOLEY)

Abbey, Max, Mégan, Katie, Aerin, and Mitchell face the highs and lows of development—with a perfectly timed boost from an animation legend.

POST-PRODUCTION (MIX & ONLINE)

With the clock ticking, the filmmakers race to finish before tackling professional post-production for the very first time
