Heaven on Earth: DVD release and interview with director

Heaven on Earth has been hugely popular on this site since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Centring around Chand, a young Indian bride who emigrates from India to Canada to marry a man she’s never met, the film explores the themes of spousal abuse and the power of imagination.

As the film began its theatrical run in 2008, I had the opportunity to interview the director, Deepa Mehta. During that interview, she discussed her inspiration for the film, how she went about making it and her thoughts on the immigrant experience.

On March 3, the film is being released on DVD. The release date was scheduled to coincide with International Women’s Day. To mark the occasion, Deepa Mehta was kind enough to agree to be interviewed once again. This time, we discussed the film’s popularity, what she learned from the film and the impact she hopes it will have in the more intimate viewing space of people’s homes.
