The NFB teams up with Margaret Atwood

Payback: Margaret Atwood, Jennifer Baichwal, Ravida Din

Payback: Margaret Atwood, Jennifer Baichwal, Ravida Din

This week we’re featuring Michael Rubbo’s film, Margaret Atwood: Once in August all week in the online Screening Room. The film explores what shapes Atwood’s writing and what motivates her characters.

We’ve timed this feature to coincide with the news that the NFB has just optioned the film rights to Atwood’s non-fiction book, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth. Payback is about the concept of debt and how it permeates our everyday lives, how our notion of balance and what we owe one another (i.e.: our ‘debt’) forms our social relationships.

The film will be directed by Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes) and produced by Ravida Din (Family Motel).

Read the full article about Payback here.

Since the project is only entering the development stage, you can watch Once in August to get your Atwood fix now…

Since the film is going to be a documentary and that I haven’t read the book, can I have an idea about who might be the interviewees (a few of them)?

@Anh Khoi Do: Glad to see you’re excited about the film. So am I!! We’ve just optioned the rights to the book, which means the film is in early, early stages. As soon as we’ve got more information, we’ll be happy to share it.
