What’s inside the new NFB iPhone App

So here’s what the NFB iPhone app can do:

*WATCH hundreds of NFB movies on your iPhone. Most of the films available on NFB.ca are encoded for the iPhone. Soon all of them will be available.

*WATCH LATER - We wanted to make an app that was useful even outside of wi-fi hotspots so you can load films to your iPhone for up to 24 hours of offline viewing.

*SEARCH – the NFB collection on your iPhone

*CHANNELS – Browse films by category and genre. (Classic Movies, Kids’ Cartoons, etc.)

*FAVOURITES – Bookmark your favourite films

*NEARBY - Watch movies that others in your area are watching

Download the NFB iPhone app here (iTunes link).

The reviews are already coming in through Twitter:

“Possibly the greatest iPhone app ever: NFB Films. Watch 1000s of National Film Board of Canada movies. Best part? FREE!”

  29. Don Wray says:

Does the app work on a Blackberry Bold?

  30. @Carolyn : Have you updated your iPod to the latest OS version?

@Eve : No. The films available on the app are the same ones as on the site. There are currently over 1,000 films on the site whereas the entire NFB catalog has over 13,000! We’re working real hard to get as many fils online as possible, but as you can imagine, we have a lot of work in front of us!

    @Budi : Care to elaborate?

@Christine Couture : Sorry, The app only works for iPhone and iPhone touch.

@Don Wray : No. We’re currently looking into developing a similar app for Blackberry. Stay tuned!

  32. reg says:

I’m having the same problems as ‘Carolyn’. I have the latest OS for my ipod touch and reloaded the nfb app but no luck – the videos play for a bit then stop.

  33. Carolyn says:

Still having problems. I have all the latest updates. Reinstalled twice. Shows only one minute of film then stalls and stops downloading onto my iPod touch 2nd generation.

  34. @Carolyn : Sorry to hear that.

We’re releasing our 1.1 version very soon which contains a number of bug fixes. That may solve your problem. If not, send a quick note to webmaster@nfb.ca. Our team will look into your problem.
